  32. Actually, Solaris _is_ SunOS (in part).  I've had a terrible time trying
  33. to get the definitive answer to what this Solaris thing is.  As I
  34. understand it, Solaris is the combination of (1) the SunOS UNIX
  35. operating system; and (2) OpenWindows, which is the windowing system
  36. that goes with it.  So the terms "Solaris" and "SunOS" are sort of
  37. interchangeable, since the important component of Solaris, so far as
  38. running INGRES goes, is SunOS.

  40. INGRES _does_ work with Solaris.  I currently have INGRES version 6.4/03
  41. running on a Sun SPARCstation 10 under Solaris 1.1.  The CDROM for the
  42. OS is labelled Solaris 1.1, and it says that this is SunOS 4.1.3
  43. together with OpenWindowns version 3.

  45. However, I think that when people colloquially say "Solaris" with no
  46. version, they really mean "Solaris 2.0" or SunOS version 5.something.
  47. This is a major departure from SunOS 4.1.x.  According to my imperfect
  48. understanding, 5.x is based on the A T & T flavor of UNIX, System V;
  49. whereas 4.1.x is based on the BSD flavor.

  51. I think I've heard that there _are_ folks out there who are running
  52. INGRES under Solaris 2.x, but I won't swear to it.  Get the definitive
  53. answer from your salesperson or INGRES/Advisor.
