- Actually, Solaris _is_ SunOS (in part). I've had a terrible time trying
- to get the definitive answer to what this Solaris thing is. As I
- understand it, Solaris is the combination of (1) the SunOS UNIX
- operating system; and (2) OpenWindows, which is the windowing system
- that goes with it. So the terms "Solaris" and "SunOS" are sort of
- interchangeable, since the important component of Solaris, so far as
- running INGRES goes, is SunOS.
-
- INGRES _does_ work with Solaris. I currently have INGRES version 6.4/03
- running on a Sun SPARCstation 10 under Solaris 1.1. The CDROM for the
- OS is labelled Solaris 1.1, and it says that this is SunOS 4.1.3
- together with OpenWindowns version 3.
-
- However, I think that when people colloquially say "Solaris" with no
- version, they really mean "Solaris 2.0" or SunOS version 5.something.
- This is a major departure from SunOS 4.1.x. According to my imperfect
- understanding, 5.x is based on the A T & T flavor of UNIX, System V;
- whereas 4.1.x is based on the BSD flavor.
-
- I think I've heard that there _are_ folks out there who are running
- INGRES under Solaris 2.x, but I won't swear to it. Get the definitive
- answer from your salesperson or INGRES/Advisor.
