  28. I am in exactly the same situation.  except that instead of using chrome,
  29. I use helldiver or nwreader or rnf or rusnews (I'm told rnf is still in
  30. beta testing in Europe, but will go on halcyon when it's ready).

  32. so, whether chrome exists or not, the console-only reader beast is out there.
  33. (my wife and) I personally only use waffle.exe to read/reply to mail.

  35. as an aside, on an almost-related topic:  why do people still use waffle.exe
  36. to read and post news?  what is _missing_ from these readers above?  (ones
  37. with a (*) are not problems with at least one or two of them)

  41.   - thought it was causing the waf165 mail problems I'd seen
  42.   - wanted to give online users same interface (*)
  43.   - suspected a trojan horse
  44.   - too slow to pre-scan headers (when applicable)

  46.   - nostalgic feeling of reading news out of order, not being able to
  47.     follow threads, and having to read at least first page of each post

  49. I can't help with the last one, or the second-last one either, actually,
  50. but speaking as an author of one of these things (for my own benefit) I
  51. know that the effort has already gone into making it - but a lot of people
  52. are still posting from waffle.exe, something I gave up on as being too
  53. painful a long time ago.  are _all_ these people coming in through the
  54. phone lines, where with a slow modem can make a fancier interface seem
  55. like a waste?  (though I think selecting the articles _then_ only
  56. transmitting the ones you _wanted_ over the line is quicker.  maybe it's
  57. a subjective thing)
