  16. However, in the commercial market, competition seems to be getting
  17. fierce, resulting in lots of features and lower prices.

  19. I did evaluate a program called NEWSPACE which is available at
  20. Simtel-20, but I found it to be unreliable, and my attempts to contact
  21. the author have failed.

  23. A freeware program called DIET (DIET144.ZIP at Simtel) has the ability
  24. to intercept file-open calls and compress or decompress files as they
  25. are read or written.  This may suit your needs very well, or it may not.
  26. It probably will not work with Windows.  However, I have found that for
  27. some uses it works extremely well.  You might like it, too.  Can't beat
  28. the price.  :)
