- I guess I haven't been paying very good attention to this conversation
- and I am not an African-American nor do I live in Crown Heights. However,
- I think Phil has some legitimate points to consider, especially where
- some come from personal experience. However, I would like to throw another
- angle into this discussion, if it hasn't been done already (If so, I
- apologize). Look, also, at the way the primarily white male establishment
- treats Latinos/Hispanics in the media. If one lives in latino neighborhood
- and is fortunate to have local media backed by the latino community or a
- Spanish TV channel like Univision, they're lucky. But for the rest of the
- country and the quickly growing Latino population (projected to outnumber
- African-Americans in the next century by some New York Times article, I
- believe), the few latino/ hispanic images seen are negative ones. How
- many late-night crime shows have we seen that portray the drug-dealers
- (always the drug-dealers) and criminals as suave, jewelry-wearing hispanics.
- This perfectly fits the latino stereotype we nurture in this country.
- Even the shows that show latinos as Ok guys make the character some
- poor, grateful migrant worker with eight kids. Something needs to be done
- and I think it starts by changing the incentives and opening the doors when
- people are children. That way, people can start on an even playing field.
- Just because ClarenceThomas was one of the fortunate few people to make it
- from such a poor backround means that the white male dominated establish-
- ment can easily justify the shortage of African-Americans, Women and
- minorities in the establishment by the attitude that they didn't work hard
- enough when the incentives were never equal to begin with. KERRY
