- First, you're welcome. I certainly appreciated the efforts of those who helped
- me and hope you do too, whether you were sincere or not.
- You offer specific examples. Thank you. You say that in Europe they reported
- several countries' having dropped out of the original coalition and claim that
- this was not reported in the US. I have to admit that I have not saved
- clippings but do have some specifics. So, please list the countries which you
- say dropped out, which were reported in the European press, but not in the US.
- I will check through them provided you promise not to change the argument in
- media res and redefine reporting or what are the media or some other argument
- designed to prove the originator right rather than to inspect the development.
- The extent of editorial page discussion of who should have permanent seats
- in the security council and who not has been over the years so extensive that it
- is impossible--really impossible, for a serious student of the media to have
- missed them. Taiwan's hold on the seat was a topic. When it turned out that
- the five permanent members developed into the five countries with announced
- nuclear war capability, the argument was advanced that maybe the grouping was
- all right. Every time new members are elected, the whole quota issue is raised
- and there are arguments in favor of rotating and arguments in favor or making
- new permanent regional members. Those frequently proposed have included Brazil,
- India and Japan. But regional groupings have also argued that they would prefer
- to have, e.g., an Arab state, rotating among them, or an African state, etc., so
- that there are fewer images of regional great powers. No, you just must not
- read or don't remember where you read, IF you think this is a topic not covered
- in the press. Now DON'T decide that there is a particular element which was not
- covered in a particular way in a particular medium and conclude that from that
- observation you can say that the media won't report the news because they are in
- the hands of like-thinking capitalists. The evidence is that this topic again i
- s
- one on which you err.
- Clinton's cabinet? The press asked him what his reaction was to the charge
- that he had appointed so many lawyers and he replied along the lines of, "I
- didn't realize it." And that one was bounced over tv over and over and over.
- Three concrete examples. All three demonstrate that the news is not
- suppressed.
- There are no doubt many stories which many people would like to suppress.
- And I've seen it tried. But you have illustrated how the news flows. Thanks.
