- Welcome to all new members out there. I've been with XCULT-L since 1988
- when I started it as a means of getting the students in my Cross-Cultural
- Communication course at Penn State linked to others around the world. It
- has blossomed in the last 4 years and it is with some parental pride that
- I watch new people coming and joining in the discussions. In the past
- year, Oliver Seely has done a terrific job with it and is a listowner par
- excellence.
-
- My background is in linguistics, specifically, sociolinguistics. I've
- taught at USC, UC Irvine, and Penn State--everything from ESL courses to
- training future teachers and researchers in ESL and applied linguistics to
- courses in intercultural communication and discourse analysis. My
- particular interest is the language of negotiation and I was and am an
- associate faculty member of Penn State's Center for Research in Conflict
- and Negotiation. I have been a Peace Corps volunteer (Senegal), a
- Fulbright professor in Poland, a USIA consultant in Poland, and lectured
- at the U. of Niamey (Niger) for the USIA.
-
- Since last year when I left Penn State to take on a new position in the
- Conflict Resolution Program at The Carter Center of Emory University, I
- have been involved far more in activism and advocacy than I have in
- teaching and research. We work with former President Carter on trying to
- do whatever we can (and are asked to do) to peacefully resolve civil wars.
- (Most of you have heard this all before, so anyone who wants more info,
- please feel free to drop me a line.) I am looking forward to this fall
- when I hope to teach a senior/grad. seminar at Emory on ethnic conflict
- and communication in addition to my role at The Carter Center.
-
- We do have internships at The Carter Center for undergrads. and grads (no
- pay, but great experience--we're a non-profit--great experience is all we
- can offer :-)).
-
- Cheers,
- Joyce
