  28. Perhaps, Dave, but is that a function of 'american democracy'. I don't
  29. think so. Something else, some other fundamental value, has created, for
  30. better or for worse, an AMERICAN ideal which has persisted, in relative
  31. stability, for over 100 years.

  33. David Scheider talks about a sort of general sense of national kinship as
  34. being at the heart o Americanness.

  36. However, this caveat needs to be kept in mind - while there has been a
  37. rough stability of general American identity, that identity has been
  38. highly exclusive - excluding blacks, women, the poor and so on.

  40. Perhaps the stability and persistence of the white American middle class
  41. is monumental but, something to be proud of???
