- In a previous article, maynor@RA.MSSTATE.EDU (Natalie Maynor) says:
-
- >> Are the following sentences exactly the same in meaning?
- >> If not, how different are they from each other?
- >> 1) How much do you spend a week?
- >> 2) How much do you spend per week?
- >> 3) How much do you spend in a week?
- >> 4) How much a week do you spend?
- >> 5) How much do you spend every week?
- >> 6) How much do you spend each week?
- >
- >To me they are all the same.
-
- To me, they're all just a bit different. Two and three are slightly more
- formal questions than one and four. Five and six seem to be asking for
- exact numbers, while the first four seem to ask for an averaged answer.
- CLose enough for rock and roll, though, just as Natalie said.
-
- 5)Rocky the Flying Squirrel - the Rocky half of the Rocky and Bullwinkle
- [a moose] team. It was an old cartoon television series, in which Rocky
- and Bullwinkle were the heroes [Rocky was the brains] and Natasha and Boris
- [Russian Spies] were the bad guys. It's still in syndication in most parts
- of the US.
-
- 6)Rubber and park commands - The first one beats me; this is another one of
- those joke/pun posts that are hard to explain after the fact. A Park
- command is what one gives to one's hard disk when moving the machine.
- It keeps it from being damaged. [providing one is talking to a DOS machine;
- Macs may use something else] A Rubber command may have had something to
- do with condoms, but it's just been too long.:-/
- [swiss-cheesed short-term memory rides again!]
