  17.         by mathematicians who can't balance checkbooks?

  19. I'd be worried by a mathematician who sometimes wrote + for -,
  20. or \Sigma for \Pi; or a high-school *arithmetic*
  21. teacher who couldn't balance chequebooks.  Or a bomb-disposal
  22. expert whose hand shook uncontrollably.  Or a phoneticist with a
  23. tin ear.  Or a computer programmer who doesn't initialise variables.
  24. All these little signs don't inspire confidence.
