- Thank you, Ann, for forwarding this week's Gleanings to me. I resurface for an
- instant to discuss my own listings.

- As I recall, this had something to do with silliness about rocks and
- such, and I just contributed a whole list of people whose names related
- to that general subject. In order:
-
- Rockne -- famous Notre Dame football coach in the 20s and 30s
- Bleier -- football player (Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers), now a
- TV sportscaster here
- Phillips -- NBC news reporter
- Rubble -- daughter of Barney, neighbor of Fred Flintstone on the TV
- cartoon show 'The Flintstones'
- Rock -- comic actor, co-star on 'Saturday Night Live'
- Squirrel -- star of the great cartoon 'Rocky and Bullwinkle'
- Landis -- first Commissioner of baseball
- Mount -- basketball player (was on the cover of Sports Illustrated
- while still in high school, later Purdue and a pro)
- Nelson -- marginal baseball player
- Rocco -- marginal actor
- Shales -- TV critic for the LA Times (?) and National Public Radio
- Buchholz -- marginal actor (a 'horst' is a geological formation)
- Silvers -- comedian and actor, most famous as Sgt. Ernie Bilko on TV,
- also a star of the movies 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to
- the Forum' and 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.' (Silver, of
- course, is a mineral found in rocks...)
- Raccoon -- title character in a fine Lennon-McCartney song, on the
- White Album
-
- 19) John MacLaughlin (Neal)
-
- Political pundit of the loud, self-promoting, conservative type. He is
- very entertaining, and not at all demagogic like the execrable Rush
- Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan. MacLaughlin runs several
- discussion/commentary shows, mostly on Public Broadcasting. He was
- once a Catholic priest, but left the Church to marry a former nun.
