  20. Much as I dislike Toal's tone, I agree with him to an extent. It's
  21. really not very different from the hacks in India who write poems on
  22. such occasions.

  24. It struck me that "inaugural" celebrations in India are actually quite
  25. instructive. They go through the same motions, but when you see the
  26. cynicism in their actions, and hopeless faces mouthing messages of hope,
  27. their apologetic looks for acting out formulas, the world-weary singing
  28. of hymns, and the display of their total lack of naivete, you suddenly
  29. glimpse a profundity in these otherwise trivial people.
