  23. I have only anecdotal non-evidence picked up from reading about the
  24. Holocaust.  What I remember suggested that the concentration camp SS
  25. guards and the men who operated the gas chambers didn't seem to fit
  26. any single conception of what makes a human being do things like that.
  27. Surely, some of these men (and women?) were scum before they ever put
  28. on a uniform.  Others, like the doctors, were trained as healers, not
  29. as people whose main job was to determine who could work as a slave
  30. and who would go to the gas.  Still others--I would guess the
  31. majority--were perfectly ordinary people who were trained, schooled,
  32. or whatever into regarding their victims as faceless and dehumanized.

  34. The teaching and learning part is what is most horrifying.  HOW that
  35. is done is beyond me.  How do you convince other people, and how do
  36. you convince yourself, that a Jewish baby is a rag doll into which you
  37. can stick a bayonet; or that the screams of 2000 people at a time
  38. being put to death by a slow-working commercial insecticide are not
  39. the silent cries of insects?  I don't know: if you want to call that
  40. part of the Banality of Evil, fine.  I prefer to think of it as one of
  41. the ultimate Mysteries of Evil.  It was played out in Mexico, the
  42. American West, Armenia, and the Soviet Union before the Nazis
  43. technologized it.  It was played out in Greece, Argentina, and Chile
  44. in the 1960s and 1970s.  It is being played out now in Bosnia.  And
  45. the question repeats itself: "How in God's name do these people LIVE
  46. with themselves?"

  48. Maybe not all do.  There are stories that some of the extermination
  49. camp guards mutinied and refused to do their "jobs."  There are
  50. stories of men like the SS officer Kurt Gerstein who went to the
  51. Vatican to ask Pope Pius XII to intervene.  There are still others of
  52. SS men who maneuvered to save at least some of their victims because
  53. they could not deal with what they were doing.  There are others of
  54. guards who became alcoholics, drug addicts, and suicides...maybe to
  55. still the sounds of those screams and their consciences.

  57. And there were others who enjoyed it.  I don't know the answer.
