  12. Well, last week in our undergraduate research group, we read an article
  13. called "The Education of a Torturer" by Janice Gibson and Mika
  14. Haritos-Fatouros.  The article was originally published in Psychology
  15. Today in 1986, and was reprinted in a Comp II text under the section on
  16. Obedience to Authority.  The article is truly chilling.  It mentions
  17. several other studies I have known about, including Stanley Milgram's
  18. experiments w/ shock treatments and Ronald Jones Third Wave experiment
  19. w/ high school students.

  21. The ultimately chilling conclusion is that torturer's MUST have normal
  22. personalities--"Any of us, in a similar situation, might be capable of
  23. the same cruelty.  One probably cannot train a deranged sadist to be an
  24. effective torturer or killer.  He must be in complete control of himself
  25. on the job."

  27. The evidence for this is quite convincing, but I still want to deny it.
