- Well, last week in our undergraduate research group, we read an article
- called "The Education of a Torturer" by Janice Gibson and Mika
- Haritos-Fatouros. The article was originally published in Psychology
- Today in 1986, and was reprinted in a Comp II text under the section on
- Obedience to Authority. The article is truly chilling. It mentions
- several other studies I have known about, including Stanley Milgram's
- experiments w/ shock treatments and Ronald Jones Third Wave experiment
- w/ high school students.
-
- The ultimately chilling conclusion is that torturer's MUST have normal
- personalities--"Any of us, in a similar situation, might be capable of
- the same cruelty. One probably cannot train a deranged sadist to be an
- effective torturer or killer. He must be in complete control of himself
- on the job."
-
- The evidence for this is quite convincing, but I still want to deny it.
- I guess that's just my American Optimism.
