  19. PRE-COLLEGE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS BY ELECTRONIC MAIL?

  21. Recent estimates indicate that there are now more than
  22. 50,000 classroom teachers from primary, middle, and
  23. secondary schools who hold accounts on the Internet.
  24. This makes a very special kind of learning available to
  25. them: one which directly involves subject matter experts
  26. communicating with students and teachers about their
  27. specialties, via electronic mail.

  29. With support from the Texas Center for Educational
  30. Technology, we (at the University of Texas at Austin)
  31. are now piloting a new Internet-based service (the
  32. "Electronic Emissary") that will bring together pre-
  33. college students, their teachers, and subject matter
  34. experts (SMEs) electronically, helping them to create
  35. telecomputing exchanges centered around the students'
  36. learning in the SMEs' disciplines.  For example,
  37.  
  38. *  A class studying South America could learn about
  39. recent global environmental research results from a
  40. scientist who studies rainforest deforestation in
  41. Brazil.
  42.  
  43. *  A class studying geometry might "talk" electronically
  44. with Euclid, who is actually a mathematics professor.
  45.  
  46. *  A class studying the future of education might
  47. converse with an emerging technologies specialist from
  48. California's Silicon Valley.
  49.  
  50. *  A class studying American History might
  51. electronically interview Harry Truman, who is really a
  52. curator with the National Archives.
  53.  
  54. *  A class exploring the rapidly-changing governmental
  55. structures that are emerging in what was once the Soviet
  56. Union might correspond with a group of graduate
  57. political science students at a university in the CIS.
  58.  
  59. *  Or, a class reading _Huckleberry Finn_ might
  60. correspond with an African-American studies scholar
  61. about the repercussions resulting from the enacting of
  62. the Emancipation Proclamation.

  64. In this pilot phase of the project, 10-12 SMEs or SME
  65. groups are needed to correspond regularly (approximately
  66. 4 times per week) with primary, middle school, or
  67. secondary students and their teachers (1 SME or expert
  68. group per class).  Each electronic exchange will begin
  69. with 2 weeks of project planning via electronic mail
  70. between the SMEs and the teachers (2/16 - 2/28/93).
  71. Communications with students will begin during the week
  72. of March 1st, and will continue for 4 - 6 weeks.
