- Yeah, I too can swear that 3.30 runs Windows faster than 5.0. The only
- problem with DOS 3.30 that I know of is the 32MB limitation for a disk
- partition. Only 4 partitions are allowed per disk, so all I could
- possibly get was 120M HDs under 3.30.
-
- I remember DOS 3.30 taking up as little as 70K below the code fence
- (640K). 5.0 shows ~120K - if you delete your CONFIG.SYS and your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT (not a good idea) :) 180K is a reasonable number if you
- have Smartdrv, Stacker and some network. Load some high and you'll
- save 20K from below the code fence.
-
- A general rule I keep in mind when developing software is "Small is
- beautiful". Small is also faster, 10 instructions invariably execute
- faster than 100 instructions. The overhead of opening a file, reading,
- writing etc. surely effects the response time of Windows.
