- Here's a big explanation:
- Every app running maintains its own color palette (if it wants to), which
- contains an unlimited amount of colors. As the app logs the palette entries,
- the system palette fills up, and the last few are "collapsed", i.e. mapped onto
- the most similar color already on the system palette.
- When you switch to the GIF viewer, it loads its palette to the system, forcing
- the other apps to collapse theirs. This causes a minor degradation in color
- quality, but is the best way to deal with 8 bits I've seen. If you want to be
- pukealized, watch an Iris Indigo... 8-(
