  16.       Special Topics Issue of _JASIS_ on Spatial Information Systems
  17.       JASIS = Journal of the American Society for Information Science
  18.  
  19.     Spatial information systems include geographic information systems
  20.     (GIS), remote-sensing (RS), global positioning systems (GPS), automated
  21.     manufacturing facilities management (AM/FM), and advanced navigational
  22.     systems.  These have become a billion dollar a year industry just in
  23.     the U.S.  Such systems are having major impacts in the way individuals,
  24.     governments, not-for-profit and for-profit corporations collect, use,
  25.     and monitor spatial information.

  27.     Papers are solicited on topics on particular aspects of the
  28.     representation, storage, retrieval, cognitive processing, or
  29.     management of spatial information. Articles should represent
  30.     original research (theoretical or empirical), focusing upon a
  31.     particular aspect of this broad and growing interdisciplinary domain.
  32.  
  33.                        Topics of interest include:
  34.            Knowledge representation for spatial data
  35.            Research in storage and retrieval of spatial data
  36.            Developments in telecommunication and network use of spatial data
  37.            Research in combining spatial and non-spatial data for resolving
  38.                     personal information needs (e.g., in-car navigation
  39.                     or recreational uses)
  40.            Empirical and theoretical work related to user interfaces and
  41.                     query languages for spatial data
  42.            Empirical work in cognitive metaphors for navigation that
  43.                     apply human wayfinding abilities
  44.            Developments in 3D, multimedia GIS, and animation for spatial data
  45.            Spatial decision support tools or spatial groupware issues
  46.            Research and developments in standards for spatial data
  47.            Research in the role of spatial data in environmental issues
  48.            Research related to the storage, retrieval, management, and
  49.                     cognitive behavior in using spatial information
  50.

  63.         publication is August 31, 1993.  All manuscripts will be reviewed
  64.         by a select panel of referees, and those accepted will be published
  65.         in a special issue of the _Journal of the American Society for
  66.         Information Science_ (JASIS).

  68.         Of course, original artwork and a signed copy of the copyright
  69.         release form will be required for all accepted papers.
