- Derek,

- For details call Amtrak at 800-USA-RAIL. I've found that enjoyment of
- rail travel depends a lot on the individual. I enjoy it. The basic
- rate is for a large, roomy coach seat. With luck, you'll have the seat
- next to you vacant. If not, your impression of rail travel could be
- associated with your seatmate's personality. Rooms cost more--about
- equal to the cost of the initial coach seat. With a roomette or
- slumbercoach (the two cheapest forms of private accomodations), air
- travel will be much cheaper. Although with the roomette, you do get
- free meals and other features. If only a 10 hour trip, I'd recommend
- going coach.
-
- What to do for over 10 hours? My favorite pastime is watching the
- countrside go by. You can also wander to the lounge car (the only car
- that has a smoking section) for a snack or drink. Meals, especially
- breakfast and sometimes dinner, are quite nice and not outrageous.
-
- If you do decide to travel coach, TAKE a blanket or sleeping bag.
- AMTRAK will give you a pillow, but if you get cold (you will), they sell
- blankets in the lounge car.
-
- Also, be aware that AMTRAK travel west of the Mississippi always gets
- better reviews than travel in the east. You will be attempting a trip
- over some of the less desirable areas.
-
- Round trips are cheaper than two one-ways. They also have air/rail
- combos (air one way, rail the other) that would give you a taste of rail
- travel at a discount without committing to a round trip rail tour. If I
- were you, I'd go for it, even without your previous hassles with the
- airlines.
