  12. The College of Arts and Sciences at Marquette U. is considering eliminating 
  13. the present four semester foreign language requirement for students 
  14. pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree. 
  15.  
  16. The purported rationale for doing this includes:
  17.    1) Students presently do not learn enough FL in four semesters to 
  18.       "enable them to do anything".
  19.    2) Graduate programs in natural sciences do not require FL study.
  20.    3) Requirements for the major in natural sciences have grown to the point 
  21.       that the students feel they cannot fulfill both these and the FL 
  22.       requirement, and graduate in four years.

  24. Does anyone have information on how natural science departments and 
  25. professional organizations see the importance of foreign language study at 
  26. the college level?

  28. Has anyone out there faced the same situation? If so, what convincing 
  29. arguments did you advance?

  31. The (apparently) deciding committee meeting will take place next Thursday 
  32. morning (Jan. 28).
