- Where are they expecting students to live? Is your institution large or
- small, and how about the city? These questions matter; if yours is a large
- institution in a small town, there is probably some resentment on the part
- of town residents -- but much of their economy may be driven by your
- college. On the other hand, if you're a small college in a large city, you
- will have much less clout. At UBC (28,000 students in an isolated part of
- a metropolitan area of 2 million), the immediate local area acts like the
- small town I described, but the outside community has only had a few
- niggly problems. For instance, the City of Vancouver wanted to crack down
- on illegal (not-permit) secondary suites (eg. basement apartments), but
- found it very difficult to do so.

- At the University of British Columbia here in Vancouver, our Gays,
- Lesbians, and Bisexuals of UBC (GLBUBC) service organization has been
- around longer than any other campus organization in Canada -- about 15
- years, I think, if not longer. Although there are a few problems (most
- notably with washroom graffiti), in general our campus community is quite
- responsible with the rights of homosexuals. In fact, ours is one of the
- few universities which gives spousal benefits to the same-sex partners of
- its employees. I wouldn't say it's a progressive institution overall, but
- it has at least made some strides (sometimes with legal pressure).
