- Howdy friends! My name is Dianell Dreibelbis and I presently work for the
- National Wildlife Federation as a campus organizer. I recently read an e-mail
- from Noah Smith and Sean Claiborne titled "Looking for Solutions to Common
- Problems". I, as a past Student Government President strongly support SGA's
- networking with one another. I also feel that the most effective way to
- solve problems that effect one's campus/commmunity/biosphere is through
- seeking out imput from those schools who have successfully conquered such
- said problems. I have had the pleasure of witnessing even the smallest of
- campuses tackle some of the most delicate issues, one example of this would
- be the University of Wisconsin - Superior's recent referendum on sexual
- orientation.
-
- The main reason unto which I write this belated message is to express a
- common problem in which plagues most campus organizations across the country:
- simplely stated this would be the lack of focus. By focus I mean working on
- only one or two issues at a time, planning a strategy, building coalitions
- with other campus/community organization, coming up with a solution that will
- satisfy the campus/community (or at least the majority), and seeing the issue/
- campaign through. This is not meant to to be attacking in the slightest, but
- to express that as a professional campus organizer now responsible for a
- national campaign on at least 167 campuses within 11 states of the midwest
- Student Government Associations are the piller of campus organizing. SGA's
- are a democratic representation of the students, theyy set standards, they
- guide pro-active communication on issues effecting the campus community, they
- are at the forefront of campus organizing, Even though all of this may be true
- it doesn't mean that all SGA's always solve their "problems" in ways that are
- focused and pro-active. Yes, the problem may be solved and a decision may have
- been made
- but there is always room for change.
-
- I hope that no one will take this imput as criticism, honestly it is not and it
- is being stated with the highest of respect. I hope to see future communication
- along these line over SGAnet. Your comments are always welcome. I have to
- stated that I have come to you with the respect that it is through SGA's
- that the student across the country have gained access to information, tackled
- issues, and gained rights that they have never before and I am hoping that
- it will also be SGA's who set standards within campus/community organizing.
- Only you can change the present rate that we are moving and together we can
- make a difference. If anyone would like more info on campus organizing please
- feel free to contact me at nwfnatl@igc.apc.org
