- Subject: Bangkok Post Jan 28: Planned protest about helmet law
-
- ABOUT 200 operators of motorcycle taxis are expected to rally at
- Sanam Luang on Sunday to protest against the compulsory use of
- crash helmets which begins on February 1, an Interior Ministry
- source said yesterday.
-
- According to the crash helmet law, from February 1 all
- motorcyclists, including operators of motorcycle taxis and pillion
- riders, are required to wear crash helmets on all Bangkok roads
- except in small sois and in major ones specified by traffic
- police.
-
- The source said the protesters will be the same group which
- protested in front of Parliament early last month. Some of them
- will be wearing a jacket bearing the name of Interior Minister
- Chavalit Yongchaiyudh's New Aspiration Party despite the fact that
- the party has nothing to do with them, the source said.
-
- In another development, Special Branch police commissioner Pol
- Lt-Gen Phiboon Kullavanijaya yesterday briefed Gen Chavalit on the
- situation.
-
- To reporters, Pol Lt-Gen Phiboon said Special Branch police are
- closely monitoring reports that farmers, with financial support
- from some political parties, will arrive in Bangkok early next
- month to protest against the low paddy prices.
-
- Meanwhile about 500,000 crash helmets sold to motorcyclists have
- not passed standard tests, and half of these are thought to be
- below standard, Deputy Industry Minister Pornthep Techapaibul said
- yesterday.
-
- Mr Pornthep was viewing standard tests of crash helmets yesterday
- at the Industrial Standardisation Testing and Training Centre at
- Bang Pu Industrial Estate in Samut Prakan.
-
- He said most of the locally-made and imported helmets on sale now
- are up to standard and bear stickers issued by the Thai Industrial
- Standards Institute. About 10,000 sub-standard helmets had been
- seized from factories and stores.
-
- The crash helmet regulation comes into force on February 1. About
- 200,000 motorcyclists in the city still do not have helmets, Mr
- Pornthep said.
-
- Sub-standard helmets have these features: if you press the two
- sides they bend easily; the foam is easily dented when pressed;
- and there are no holes for ventilation or listening.
