- Subject: Bangkok Post Jan 28: Attache told to cooperate with Pakistan authority
-
-
- THE Foreign Ministry has urged the Thai military attache in
- Islamabad, Col Somsak Sakulthong, to co-operate with the
- Government of Pakistan in its investigation of his alleged
- involvement in smuggling.
-
- Col Somsak was allegedly found with five antique Buddha statues as
- he was about to leave Pakistan for England last week.
-
- According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sakthip Krairiksh,
- Pakistan's Ambassador to Thailand, Maj-Gen Riaz Mahmud, yesterday
- made clear that Islamabad sought the military attache's
- co-operation in order to establish how many Pakistanis were
- involved.
-
- According to the spokesman, the diplomat expressed Pakistan's wish
- for the attache's co-operation during a meeting with Foreign
- Minister Prasong Soonsiri.
-
- The envoy reportedly pointed out that it had yet to be established
- that Col Somsak was guilty. He was briefing the Foreign Minister
- on the case following a report that the Army had recalled the
- military attache for interrogation.
-
- Mr Sakthip said he had not been informed of the report. But he
- noted that Col Somsak still retained his diplomatic immunity and
- therefore could refuse to co-operate with the Pakistani
- authorities.
-
- But the spokesman urged the officer to extend his co-operation in
- the case. The foreign ministry would do its best to help, he
- added.
