- The following story is really ridiculous. I have 3 helmets, 2 of
- which have seals of approval and cost only 200 baht each while my
- best one has no such seal but it costs 800. I am using the best at
- the moment because it is full-faced and offers better protection.

- MOTORCYCLISTS who bought crash helmets some time ago will have to
- buy new ones or risk a 500 baht fine because their helmets will
- not have the official seal of approval issued by the Industry
- Ministry, Traffic Police said yesterday.
-
- Traffic Police Deputy Commander Pol Maj Prajit Srichaiyan said the
- seal is an assurance that crash helmets, to be worn by all
- motorcyclists and passengers when the law comes into effect on
- February 1, are up to standard and have been approved by the
- Industry Ministry.
-
- As law enforcement officers, traffic policemen will have to
- observe the law and will fine motorcyclists not wearing helmets
- with the ministry's official seal.
-
- He said the deadline for enforcing the law had been postponed 45
- days from December 15 and this should have been long enough for
- everyone to buy a standard crash helmet.
-
- Asked about motorcyclists who may have bought their helmets a long
- time ago, including expensive imported ones when there was no seal
- requirement, Pol Maj Prajit said:
-
- "They will have to change their helmets. One can't use price as
- the standard for safety. Life is the principle at stake. The
- helmets will have to have been tested and approved by the Interior
- Ministry."
-
- However, he added that when the law comes into effect on February
- 1 there is expected to be some confusion and the police may be too
- busy to check for the official seals on the helmets.
-
- But over a certain period of time after that date Traffic Police
- will check motorcyclists' helmets for the official seal.
-
- The maximum fine for wearing a helmet without the official seal is
- 500 baht.
