-
- In January 1993, a meeting was held between SLORC military
- officials and PRC military officials in the Sino-Burma border
- town of Muse. The meeting was initiated by the SLORC Deputy
- Military Attache to the PRC and the head of the PRC Military
- Ordnance Unit 30, Cheng Du, Sichuan Province. The objective of
- the meeting was to confirm arrangements to supply SLORC with arms
- and ammunition.
-
- SLORC representatives at the meeting were Deputy Commander of
- SLORC's northeast command Col Yae Myint, Lt Col Than Tin from the
- military attache's office in the PRC, Lt.Col Kyaw Thein from the
- war office intelligence unit, and Major Tin Yu of 542 regiment.
-
- It has been confirmed by reliable border sources that 308 trucks
- equipped with spare parts for various military equipment, heavy
- weaponry and various types of ammunition were delivered to SLORC
- between January 10th - 13th this year. Sources also state that
- this military equipment was for the Thai Burmese border.
-
- The contents of the trucks are as follows:
-
- 100, 122mm and 130mm artillery shells complete with transporters.
- large numbers of 40mm bazooka's 1969 model
- 30 trucks equipped with 12 barrel, 130mm M-cruise rockets
- numbers of 130mm,75mm,82mm and 81mm shells
-
- It was also revealed that in 1991 the PRC gave to SLORC a gift of
- 60 anti-personal tank carriers (76 APC), and in 1992 SLORC then
- purchased 100 of these tank carriers of which the spare parts
- were also included in the recent border transaction.
-
- According to information obtained regarding the meeting, PRC will
- also supply 57mm automatic artillery, and 20 complete sets of
- 130mm automatic artillery.
-
- Reliable sources also confirmed that in 1991 in the Burmese town
- of Mergwi, an agreement was reached between the previous SLORC
- leader Saw Maung and the PRC to establish a joint venture between
- the two parties to establish a factory to produce M21,M22, and
- M23 machine guns.
-
- Sometime after this meeting occurred the PRC sent Chinese
- engineers from the Yunnan Province to Mergwi to help establish
- this new joint venture. It is now believed that this factory will
- be in full production by the end of 1993. The factory will also
- be producing ammunition, and some of the equipment transported
- across the border in January will be used to further the venture.
