  13. CHINA BACKS EARLY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN CAMBODIA

  15. BEIJING (JAN. 21) DPA - China praised Thursday a statement on the Cambodian
  16. peace process by the Association of South East Asian Nations as "important and
  17. timely".
  18.    Foreign ministers of the ASEAN states called January 15 for the election of
  19. a president before scheduled general elections in war-torn Cambodia.
  20.    A foreign ministry spokesman said in Beijing that China welcomed efforts by
  21. the ASEAN states towards a comprehensive political solution to the Cambodian
  22. question and hoped they would continue to make an important contribution.
  23.    "We support a direct presidential election by the Cambodian people. As far
  24. as the arrangements are concerned, we would respect a consensus by all parties
  25. involved," the spokesman said.
  26.    The four Cambodian factions are expected to meet in Beijing before the end
  27. of January.
