- CHINA BACKS EARLY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN CAMBODIA
-
- BEIJING (JAN. 21) DPA - China praised Thursday a statement on the Cambodian
- peace process by the Association of South East Asian Nations as "important and
- timely".
- Foreign ministers of the ASEAN states called January 15 for the election of
- a president before scheduled general elections in war-torn Cambodia.
- A foreign ministry spokesman said in Beijing that China welcomed efforts by
- the ASEAN states towards a comprehensive political solution to the Cambodian
- question and hoped they would continue to make an important contribution.
- "We support a direct presidential election by the Cambodian people. As far
- as the arrangements are concerned, we would respect a consensus by all parties
- involved," the spokesman said.
- The four Cambodian factions are expected to meet in Beijing before the end
- of January.
