  17. Columbia University Libraries seeks a head for its new Electronic Data
  18. Services (EDS), jointly operated by the Libraries and Academic Computing
  19. (AcIS).  The goal of EDS is to enhance instruction and research which use
  20. numeric information and mapping data in machine-readable form.  The Head
  21. of EDS reports to the Assistant Director of the Social Science Division of
  22. the Libraries and works closely with the Assistant Director of AcIS.

  24. Responsibilites:  The incumbent will be responsible for the operation and
  25. development of data library and support services for numeric data in all
  26. machine-readable formats.  Responsibilites include overseeing day-to-day
  27. operations, developing policies and procedures, and assisting users in
  28. identifying and obtaining appropriate data.  Outreach and liaison with
  29. faculty, students, researchers, and computer lab directors are key
  30. responsibilities, as is training reference librarians to develop numeric
  31. data as a major reference resource.  The incumbent will also formulate
  32. control mechanisms for data sets, provide reference service at the Lehman
  33. Social Sciences Library where EDS is located, prepare annual budget
  34. proposals, and write grant proposals to enhance EDS.

  36. Working relationships:  The Head of EDS will work closely with the
  37. research support staff of AcIS, with the government documents librarian,
  38. and with the head of the Libraries' Electronic Text Service.  The Head of
  39. EDS administers Columbia's membership responsibilities with ICPSR, the New
  40. York State Data Center, and the National Center for Health Statistics.

  42. Requirements are:  background in social sciences and quantitative research
  43. or its support; experience with a variety of Census and other public data;
  44. experience with a broad range of numeric electronic resources and
  45. services; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to support training
  46. programs; and experience in a variety of computer environments.  Preferred
  47. qualifications are:  advanced subject degree in a social science or other
  48. research field, or accredited MLS; familiarity with major statistical
  49. packages.

  51. Salary ranges are:  Librarian I:  $30,000 - $39,000; Librarian II: $32,000
  52. - $43,000.  Excellent benefits include assistance with University housing
