- Columbia University Libraries seeks a head for its new Electronic Data
- Services (EDS), jointly operated by the Libraries and Academic Computing
- (AcIS). The goal of EDS is to enhance instruction and research which use
- numeric information and mapping data in machine-readable form. The Head
- of EDS reports to the Assistant Director of the Social Science Division of
- the Libraries and works closely with the Assistant Director of AcIS.

- Responsibilites: The incumbent will be responsible for the operation and
- development of data library and support services for numeric data in all
- machine-readable formats. Responsibilites include overseeing day-to-day
- operations, developing policies and procedures, and assisting users in
- identifying and obtaining appropriate data. Outreach and liaison with
- faculty, students, researchers, and computer lab directors are key
- responsibilities, as is training reference librarians to develop numeric
- data as a major reference resource. The incumbent will also formulate
- control mechanisms for data sets, provide reference service at the Lehman
- Social Sciences Library where EDS is located, prepare annual budget
- proposals, and write grant proposals to enhance EDS.

- Working relationships: The Head of EDS will work closely with the
- research support staff of AcIS, with the government documents librarian,
- and with the head of the Libraries' Electronic Text Service. The Head of
- EDS administers Columbia's membership responsibilities with ICPSR, the New
- York State Data Center, and the National Center for Health Statistics.

- Requirements are: background in social sciences and quantitative research
- or its support; experience with a variety of Census and other public data;
- experience with a broad range of numeric electronic resources and
- services; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to support training
- programs; and experience in a variety of computer environments. Preferred
- qualifications are: advanced subject degree in a social science or other
- research field, or accredited MLS; familiarity with major statistical
- packages.

- Salary ranges are: Librarian I: $30,000 - $39,000; Librarian II: $32,000
- - $43,000. Excellent benefits include assistance with University housing
