  17. Responsibilities
  18.         The individual will provide administrative leadership for
  19. programs in a newly reorganized department leading to B.S.Ed.
  20. and M.A.T. teacher education degrees in early childhood,
  21. elementary, secondary, and special education; M.S. and Ed. D.
  22. degrees in early childhood, special education, reading,
  23. instructional design and technology; and instruction and
  24. curriculum.  The chairperson shall provide leadership and vision
  25. for the department; communicate effectively with alumni and
  26. university colleagues; establish cooperative relationships with
  27. professional educators in schools, social agencies, private agencies,
  28. and higher education institutions; and provide sound management
  29. for the department's resources.  Supplemental administrative
  30. support is planned, at the discretion of the new chair.

  32. Qualifications
  33.         The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in
  34. Education, possess personal and professional qualities of
  35. leadership and vision, have positive and dynamic interpersonal
  36. skills, have a demonstrated record of leadership in at least one
  37. curricular area offered by the department  including experience
  38. working with diverse educational constituencies.  The successful
  39. candidate must also possess  administrative experience in higher
  40. education with a record of research, teaching, and service
  41. commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor, and
  42. have a strong commitment to teacher education in urban settings.
  43.  
  44. Setting
  45.         Memphis State University is a growing, comprehensive urban
  46. university  serving over 21,000 students.  Fully accredited by the
  47. Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Memphis State
  48. contains colleges of arts and sciences,  business and economics,
  49. communication and fine arts, education, engineering, and schools
  50. of law and nursing.  The University's campus is centrally located
  51. in an attractive residential area of Memphis, a major metropolitan
  52. area with a population of over one million.
  53.         The College of Education is fully NCATE approved and includes
  54. departments of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research,
  55. Instruction and Curriculum Leadership, Consumer Science and
  56. Education, Leadership, and Health, Physical Education and
  57. Recreation.
  58.         One of five departments in the College of Education, the
  59. Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership has 40
  60. faculty offering undergraduate and graduate programs in early
  61. childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education, reading,
  62. instructional design and technology; and instruction and
  63. curriculum.

  65. Rank and Salary
  66.         Tenure track associate or full professor; the salary is
  67. competitive.

  71. will be reviewed beginning March 1, 1993, and continue until the
  72. position is filled.
