- John Kraft's introspective posting prompts this: It seems to me that men
- at least tend to signal their presence in the restroom, e.g., by making
- a noise of some sort--"splashing" as Kraft mentions, or clearing their
- throat, or humming, or jingling their belt buckle, or something. Does anyone
- else notice this?
-
- The animal behavior literature suggests that some critters use vocalizations
- as "proximity signals." For example, little cheeping noises among chicks and
- quail let their unseen buddies know they are nearby (and perhaps in what
- direction and how far away). Parallel here? Warning to maintain some distance
- in the restroom?
-
- (Don't you guys wonder what the women are making of all this? Boy, do we
- sound insecure!)
