- => I'm wondering if this is related to women's tendency to go to the
- => bathroom together. Perhaps they are motivated by personal space invasion
- => instead of inhibited, like us guys. I also wonder if there's a good
- => sociobiological explanation, like the men who preferred more space during
- => urination while out on the hunt had more reproductive success than those
- => who got too close to their fellow hunters. Then there's also a good
- => psychoanalytic interpretation ... which is obvious.
-
- And then again, perhaps the fact that - unlike a men's restroom with
- visible urinals - a women's restroom offers consistent privacy for urination
- plays a part.
-
- If a woman accompanies another woman to the restroom, the only area
- in which they will both be in close proximity is the public area (sinks,
- lounge - more frequent than in men's rooms - etc.), while that proximity
- extends to the urinals in a men's room. Thus the "experience" being shared
- is not one commonly considered private (elimination) in our society in the
- case of women, but is in the case of men.
-
- I doubt you'll find a sociobiological explanation. Mores concerning
- urination are cultural not universal. In some cultures there is no attempt
- at privacy whatever during urination, while in others absolute privacy is
- manditory. Rather than a sociobiological root, it would seem a more
- reasonable explanation would be the increased vunerability experienced
- during urination. Men who through tradition were socialized to be defensive
- would, under this model, be more uncomfortable with other men (read
- aggressors) present at a vunerable moment than would women who were
- socialized to be supportive of the group (and thus would be MORE comfortable
- when others were present as protectors at a vunerable moment).
-
- On the other hand, perhaps it's just a case of "locker room
- inferiority complexes!" ;)
