-
- Sorry about that last posting on bathroom behaviors. I meant to
- trash the post, but accidently sent it. (I hate when that happens)
-
- Let me try again to communicate.
-
- After reading all the recent postings about ethics and bathroom
- studies, I got off my lazy keister, turned of my computer and
- went to the library. Reading the Middlemist et al study on personal
- space invasion was a lot of fun. What a cute study!!
-
- While reading the article, it felt as if someone had let a secret out
- from the "good ole boys club". Namely, that us guys tend to get a little
- uptight when we pee next to each other. Except, of course, when we
- are engaged in distance or duration contests.
-
- Allow me to summarize some of the basic facts of the study for those
- who weren't quite as motivated as me to read the article.
- Middlemist et al, (1976), JPSP, v 33, p 541-46
- Middlemist and his gang wanted to measure physical arousal resulting from
- personal space invasion. Personal space was invaded by a confederate
- urinating either next to or one urinal down from the subject. A control
- group was no confederate present. Physical arousal was defined as the
- inhibited ability to relax the external urethral sphincter, which would cause
- a delay in the onset of urination, and an increase in intravesical pressure,
- which would cause a shortening of urination duration. They hypothsized that
- as personal space was invaded, there would a delay in urination onset and
- a decrease in duration. Their hypotheses were confirmed.
-
- Pretty nifty if you as me. In case anyone was wondering as to how they could
- be sure of onset and duration times, I'll tell you. The experimenters
- placed a prism type mirror above the subjects urinal and watched the
- urine flow as they sat in a bathroom stall. Not so nifty if you ask me.
-
- So, what does this have to with handwashing behavior, Betty?
- Is handwashing going to be considered a coping mechanism for
- personal space inavsion? I would be very happy to read about
- your proposed extension, please repost your thoughts on matter.
- Even if it is just for fun.
-
- Bye everyone,
