  16. Dear PACS-Lers:

  18. This is an introductory message from the Center for Electronic
  19. Records of the National Archives to subscribers of PACS-L.  Some
  20. of you may be interested in information about our holdings and
  21. program.  For your information, we do not currently make any of
  22. our holdings or finding aids available via remote access (we DO
  23. NOT maintain a bulletin board or Internet accessible account).
  24. However, we do provide reference services via electronic mail by
  25. answering questions about our holdings.
  26.  
  27. There are two main sources of information about the Center for
  28. Electronic Records of the National Archives and Records
  29. Administration.  The first is General Information Leaflet 37,
  30. "Information About Electronic Records in the National Archives
  31. for Prospective Researchers."  Included in GIL 37 are brief
  32. descriptions of the National Archives and the Center for
  33. Electronic Records, how we obtain and maintain the records in our
  34. custody, reference and access, and eight kinds of records in our
  35. custody (Attitudinal Data, Demographic Data, Economic and
  36. Financial Statistics, Education Data, Health and Social Services
  37. Data, International Data, Military Data, and Scientific and
  38. Technological Data).

  40. Another source of information about our holdings is the "Center
  41. for Electronic Records Title List (A Partial and Preliminary List
  42. of the Datasets in the Custody of the National Archives)."   The
  43. Title List is organized by the archival Record Group in which
  44. each data file is accessioned.  Information contained in the list
  45. is maintained and updated in a computerized database by staff in
  46. the Center for Electronic Records.  Approximately 4,500 data
  47. files of over 14,000 in the custody of the Center for Electronic
  48. Records are currently included in the database.  Because this is
  49. only a subset of all data files in the custody of the National
  50. Archives, the current version of the Title List is considered
  51. partial and preliminary.
