- ----------------------------Original message----------------------------
- I've been watching this list for a couple weeks now and have seen no real
- discussion of the ODA (Open Document Architecture) and SGML (Standard
- Generalized Markup Language) standards. I am not in the library business, but
- my company has a need for sharing documents-in-progress among different editors
- and hardware platforms; long-term storage of documents that have been created
- with different editors/platforms; and search, retrieval and delivery of these
- stored documents, again, to recipients using different editors/platforms. We
- strongly believe that using standards-based formats is to our advantage in the
- long term, and are trying to avoid document management systems that store the
- documents in proprietary formats.
-
- Unlike many organizations, we don't have a single technical writing department.
- The authors are our approximately 4000 technical staff, so it's not practical
- to train them all to use SGML tagging. At this point, I envision ODA used for
- peer-to-peer communication of documents-in-progress, and then a translation of
- these (when finished) into SGML for long-term storage, since I think SGML is
- better suited to search operations (among other things). There is a companion
- standard to ODA, called ODL (Open Document Language), which provides for the
- SGML representation of an ODA document. The only catch is, to the best of my
- knowledge, nobody has implemented the ODL standard yet (we may have to try this
- ourselves, but I really don't want to - it takes a full-time effort to maintain
- a product to standards specifications since, ironically, standards are rarely
- static).
-
- Any comments on my problem and/or my thought of using both ODA and SGML are
- encouraged; alternative solutions are welcome too, though I'll say right now
- getting all users on the same editor is not possible in our environment. I'd
- also appreciate any pointers to mailing lists and/or other _interactive_
- resources more focused on ODA and SGML. I have plenty of standards documents.
- What I need now is discussion with people working in the area.
