  30. This directory was conceived in the context of measuring in some way
  31. the large component of the monographic bibliographic record resource of Europe
  32. which is represented in various "bibliographic utility" or union catalogue
  33. organisations.
  34. The original focus was technical services, though this was broadened somewhat
  35. in the second edition. Many (most?) of the resources described are
  36. not publicly accessible, and many are not connected to the academic or
  37. research networks.
