  16. I'd like to add a note of sympathy and encouragement to the EFF's
  17. recent announcement of bloodletting, donning-of-neckties, and move-
  18. to-within-the-Beltway. One of the great hopes which Clinton's
  19. presidency carries for libraries and information networkers is the
  20. influence that Vice President Al Gore and CEA chair Laura Tyson now
  21. will have in hi-tech policy. EFF, and Mitch Kapor personally, have
  22. an opportunity -- an obligation, I think -- to represent all of us
  23. there now with their intelligent, articulate, and responsible views
  24. on telecommunications policy and the National Public Network.

  26. It is too bad that the legal end of EFF's previous concerns may get
  27. neglected for a bit. Policy is more important, though: Clinton-
  28. Gore-Tyson, and Kapor-EFF, have an opportunity now to write the
  29. laws which will govern the rest of us in telecommunications and
  30. networking for the next several decades. I personally welcome EFF's
  31. decision to focus its primary attention on that formidable job.
