- Emerging Communities:
- Integrating Networked Information into Library Services
-
-
-
- Wide area computer networks, such as those comprising the Internet, are
- providing libraries with access to a growing array of information resources.
- They are also opening new channels for communication both within and beyond
- organizational boundaries, encouraging librarians to participate in the
- development of new electronic communities with colleagues and patrons.
- Electronic information resources and communication networks may facilitate,
- even transform, many aspects of library work, but a number of problems and
- issues also exist, making the transition far from easy. "Emerging
- Communities: Integrating Networked Information into Library Services" will
- provide an opportunity for information professionals from a wide variety of
- settings to discuss their experiences and concerns in the informal
- educational setting long associated with the Data Processing Clinics. Over
- twenty-five speakers (including Paul Evan Peters, Clifford A. Lynch, Ronald
- L. Larsen, Hope N. Tillman, Pauline A. Cochrane, Karen Markey Drabenstott,
- Pat Molholt, James Love, Charles Hildreth, Bruce Schatz, and Steve Cisler)
- will share their research results, expertise, and insights. Conference topics
- include:
-
- o The use of computer networks in various types of libraries libraries to
- accomplish institutional goals, provide traditional and new services, and
- communicate with peers and users;
-
- o Networked communities and implications for librarians;
-
- o Legal, economic, and policy issues related to the electronic dissemination
- of information;
-
- o Bibliographic control of networked information; and
-
- o New roles for information professionals in the networked environment.
-
- In addition, pre-conference workshops will allow participants to explore
- several aspects of networking in depth. George H. Brett and Greg Newby will
- provide a hands-on introduction to the basics of Internet use. Tracy LaQuey
- Parker and Philip Doty will discuss options and procedures for obtaining an
- Internet connection. Anne G. Lipow will present principles and techniques for
- training staff and end-users in network use. Finally, a workshop led by F.W.
- Lancaster will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about
- methods for assessing networking needs and impacts.
-
- The conference will also include an evening of informal demonstrations of
- network tools and resources by conference participants; personal computers
- connected to the Internet will be made available to attendees who wish to
- demonstrate relevant systems and services from their own institutions or in
- particular areas of interest. Another special feature will be the "Meet the
- Authors" continental breakfast. Tracy LaQuey Parker, Ed Krol, and Anne G.
- Lipow--authors of popular new Internet guides--will be on hand.
-
- Who should attend?
-
- Anyone who wants to learn more about the use of computer networks in
- information environments will find the conference of interest. Workshops and
- presentations have been designed specifically for librarians, library
- administrators, and systems librarians in all types of libraries and
- information centers; network administrators, user support staff, and others
- involved in planning for network implementation and use. Library school
- faculty and students will also benefit from attending the conference.
-
- Conference Support:
-
- An electronic network version of the conference proceedings will be made
- available by The Coalition for Networked Information. The following are
- conference contributors:
-
-
- Data Research Associates
- Institute of Government and Public Affairs, University of Illinois
-
- REGISTRATION FEE: The registration fee for the conference is $340 ($380 after
- March 5, 1993), which includes the Sunday night dinner, Monday luncheon,
- continental breakfasts and refreshments on Monday and Tuesday, and a
- hardbound copy of the Clinic proceedings. The pre-conference workshops cost
- $35 each and are not included in this fee.
