- ----------------------------Original message----------------------------
- I have uploaded an interesting and rather neat little reference expert system
- to the LIBSOFT ftp archive.
-
-
- It's BRA (Biographical Reference Advisor), produced at Goucher College in
- Maryland ca. 1987. (Forgot exact date) I ran across it when I was doing an
- independent project during doctoral studies back in 1990.
-
- Yeah, it's several years old, ages ago by our hightechie clock. But it's an
- interesting and well-done little system, and deserves more exposure. In many
- ways, it's an interesting comparison to the more well-known Univ. of Houston's
- expert system. The Goucher College product was produced using "1st Class," a
- powerful expert system generator.
-
- The 1st Class expert system generator uses a software approach to
- automatically construct an expert system. It works by taking a good
- representative set of problem examples and correct solutions. The algorithm
- basically iteratively constructs a decision tree until it can correctly answer
- every one of the examples presented. You can print or display to inspect the
- decision tree logic. If you find a logical flaw, you can just create another
- example to cover that case.
-
- Can be from a .WKS spreadsheet file, a DBase or Paradox file, a comma-
- delimited file, etc. This means you can use record of past data, transaction
- records, or just a buncha examples you and a couple of bored friends make up
- to pass the time of day. :-)
-
- But, hey, this means heuristic expert systems, AI constructed from experience,
- the triumph of empiricism!
-
- For sure, it's less labor-intensive than many other expert system approaches.
-
- If you'd like to look at this, you can ftp it from
-
- hydra.uwo.ca in directory LIBSOFT
-
- The files are BIOGREF.ZIP and .DOC. Be sure to use binary mode ftp to get the
- ..ZIP file. Please check with local ftp experts for help if you have problems.
- The files ARE okay; Gordon Nickerson has checked them at that end.
-
- cheers,
-
- - ernest
