- For Austin Kerr:
-
- I suggest you run CHKDSK on your system--it sounds like you have at
- least one cross-linked file. There are several events that can cause
- this to happen. One notorious one relates to Windows, if you have
- tried it on your new computer; it seems to have a couple of possible
- scenarios:
-
- 1) If you run Windows without STACKS set to at least STACKS=9,256
- Windows runs out of stack frames and corrupts the file system.
-
- 2) Some versions of DR DOS 6.0 are not compatible with Windows 3.1 and
- can cause this kind of corruption. There is a patch to repair the
- problem available directly from Digital Research at no cost.
-
- Other events, such as a power failure, system crash or power down
- while a program has files open can also cause the problem, as can
- *some* interactions between disk caches and memory management
- software.
-
- If CHKDSK shows that your have problems, you must run CHKDSK again
- with the /F switch to correct them. I don't recommend using the /F
- switch on the first pass, since it's nice to know what the situation
- is before you begin to change things. You *can* use the /v switch so
- that it will tell you which files are involved if there are problems,
- but it will probably scroll very fast on your machine.
