- Jim Olivetti makes an interesting observation about the two
- articles in ONLINE. it is certainly a coincidence that these two
- articles appeared in the same issue. I was not aware that there
- was an article in ONLINE about searching Dialog, BRS, etc. via
- the Internet until someone mentioned it on LIBREF -- you see, I
- have not yet seen the January issue, only the galleys of my article,
- since I am pretty far down on the routing list and I have not yet
- received my complimentary copy from ONLINE. But I did not want
- to leave the impression that I was criticising the use of the
- Internet to access commercial services like Dialog -- quite the
- contrary: it is in fact more cost-effective to access these
- services through the internet because the telecommunications costs
- are less. The point I wanted to make was that the Internet is
- more than just a way to access remote databases, not that this
- is not an important function -- it is. My remarks were certainly
- not directed at the other article in the January issue of
- ONLINE, since I didn't even know it was there when I wrote (BTW,
- I'm looking forward to reading it!)
-
- Jim's comment about whether the communications function of the
- Internet will diminish as it matures is something I've thought about,
- too. Will the "experts" stop responding as more people use the
- Internet to ask questions? I hope not, because i enjoy talking
- with others on the net, learning new things and hopefully contributing
- as well.
-
- I am particularly enjoying this discussion and have learned some
- new ways to explore the Internet simply by reading about other's
- experiences.
