- To conceptualize the Internet as another way to access databases, like
- connecting to Dialog, BRS, Nexis, etc., is missing the point. There
- are certainly more user-friendly ways to search for information in
- databases than via Internet protocols. The most important feature
- of the Internet for reference service, IMHO, is not the ability to
- tap into databases, but to connect with other experts via tthe
- computer lists like LIBREF-L or some of the more specialized lists
- (MEDLIB-L, BUSLIB-L, CHMINF, etc. I use the Internet to find answers
- to questions I can't find in books and databases. This type of use,
- of course, does not provide the patron with the answer on the
- spot, like searching Dialog for a list of relevant citations on
- a particular subject, but it does produce results within a day,
- sometimes within several hours of posting. The Internet connects
- me with experts all over the world who I can call upon for help, and
- who likewise can (and do) call upon me. As reference librarians we
- can't possibly know everything about everything, but I consider it part
- of my job as a business librarian to identify and connect with a variety
- of specialists (librarians and non-librarians) who can point me in the
- right direction. I consider the Internet my "electronic Rolodex" --
- it connects me with people and resources I would never know about
- otherwise -- and this is the theme of the article I wrote with
- Hope Tillman (tillman@babson) for the January issue of _Online_.
