- No, you're not paranoid Larry. I think there is a strong undercurrent
- of denial amoung those who don't enjoy change. We pesky computer types
- have an uphill fight on our hands to prove the value of the new medium
- without sending rude, frightening messages to our less enthusiastic
- colleagues.
-
- My pet peeve regarding attitude is: "If it can't duplicate what
- traditional source XYZ does, then what use is it?" Which is sort of
- like saying of the first exercise on the printing press: "So what,
- I already have a nice hand written bible."
-
- At the same time I appreciate that much needs to be done to make
- the new media more productive and better organized.
-
- There is, also, an element of playing. A supervisor who discourages
- a staff member from spending 2 hours seeking an answer on Internet is
- just as justified as one who disallows a 2 hour hunt through one's
- own in-house resources, if there are rules about how long to spend
- on any given reference question. I feel strongly, however, that
- "playing" is how pesky computer types learn so it does have intrinsic
- value so long as it doesn't blot out one's assigned work.
