- At the Homer Babbidge Library at the University of Connecticut, Storrs,
- we are beginning to explore installing a TDD with answering machine
- and printer capability. I would appreciate hearing from any folk who
- have had experience with this type of TDD or have any words of wisdom.
- Our Telecommunications Department is leaving it up to me to determine
- the best TDD for our situation. At present we are short staffed hence the
- reason for the answering machine/printer capability.

- I am looking for information about how disabled persons are served by
- Readers' Advisory Services in all types of libraries. Since most people
- browse in the stacks to find recreational reading materials, I am
- particularly interested in how Readers' Advisors can re-create this
- browing function for those unable to find materials that way.
- Bibliographic citations would also be very helpful!

- The EASI Way to Assess Your Access
-
- Adaptive Computing Evaluation Kit
-
- THE SPIRIT OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT--If the Americans with
- Disabilities Act has left you guessing as to what you are required to do
- to meet the needs of students, faculty and staff with disabilities, let
- EDUCOM/EUIT'S Project EASI give you some ideas and guidelines that will
- help you meet both your campus needs and the spirit of the ADA. We are
- offering the "Adaptive Computing Evaluation Kit for Colleges and
- Universities."
-
- This comprehensive kit, which was designed to help schools complete the
- computing component of the ADA-required self-evaluation of colleges and
- universities, has an overview of legal issues and an Adaptive
- Computing Self-evaluation Background Checklist to help schools evaluate
- what type of services they offer and what type of services they should
- be offering. The Checklist is an excellent reference point for
- launching a long-term, strategic plan for the implementation of adaptive
- computing services on your campus. This checklist will also be useful
- in the future, as a document you can use to monitor your progress in
- providing adaptive computing services.
-
- The kit also includes a User Needs Survey, which will help you determine
- what types of services your disabled population requires. Finally, the
- kit includes a short evaluation form that schools can sumbit as the
- computing part of the self-evaluation survey required by the Americans
- with Disabilities Act.
-
- With the payment of the applicable license fee for the Adaptive
- Computing Evaluation Kit, campuses may receive one-half hour of phone
- consultation about the information in this kit. The consultation will
- be with one of EASI's consultants, many of whom have already helped
- implement a successful adaptive computing program at a college or
- university campus.
-
- This kit is available on paper or through electronic mail and is
- offered on the "shareware" concept. You are encouraged to distribute
- for information and examination, any form of this kit at no obligation.
- If you choose to use any portion of the document to benefit your
- institution, EDUCOM requires payment of the following licensing fees.
- For campuses with 5,000 or fewer students (fte) the license fee is $150.
- For campuses with more than 5,000 students (fte), the license fee is
- $250. There is a 10% discount for EDUCOM-member institutions.
-
- You may examine this document electronically or on paper. There is a
- $10 handling charge if you wish to examine this kit on paper. For more
- information on EASI's "Adaptive Computing Evaluation Kit for Colleges
- and Universities," please contact CSMICLC@MVS.OAC.UCLA.EDU or call
- Carmela Castorina at (310) 640-3193.
-
- Nothing in this kit should be treated as providing any legal advice.
- EASI urges that you consult your campus legal department or 504/ADA
- Compliance Office for legal advice prior to implementing any of this
- kit.

-
- This year the Super Bowl will be played on Sunday January 31. As
- in years past that day is expected, once again, to be the single
- worst day for domestic violence in the USA. The volume of calls
- handled by domestic violence shelters around the nation increases
- by as much as 40% on this day. Victims may become disabled or even
- die as a result.
-
- To try to stem this tide of violence Fairness and Accuracy in
- Reporting (FAIR) has asked NBC to carry two Public Service
- Announcements about domestic violence during their Super Bowl
- telecast this year. Additional support has come from the Women's
- Action Coalition (WAC) of Los Angeles And in an editorial in the
- January 17, 1993 edition of the New York Times.
-
- Your help is needed. Send your letter or fax in support of FAIR
- and this initiative to NBC. the FAX number for NBC is:
- 212-664-5835. A sample letter follows. You can, of course,
- rephrase or rewrite this letter to your liking, but please FAX or
- write them immediately. Also, please cross-post this announcement
- wherever you think it appropriate.
-
- Thanks for helping. You may save someone's life, skeletal
- structure, or their eyesight.
-
- SAMPLE LETTER
-
- Dick Ebersol President, NBC Sports
- NBC
- 30 Rockefeller Plaza
- New York, NY 10112
-
- Dear Mr. Ebersol:
-
- I support Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting's (FAIR) request that
- you air at least two Public Service Announcements about domestic
- violence during the Super Bowl game. The Super Bowl is one of the
- most widely viewed television events of the year; it is also the
- day, according to women's shelters, when calls for help increase by
- as much as 40%.
-
- By airing PSAs, NBC will bring the critical issue of domestic
- violence to the attention of a vast audience.. Since violence
- increases so sharply during and following Super Bowl games, you are
- in the best position this year to help alleviate this national
- tragedy. Please help prevent this violence. You may even save
- lives.
-
- Sincerely,
-
-

- AEJMC Call For Papers
- Interest Group on the Status of Persons with Disabilities
- Submitted by Clark Edwards <edwards@DUQ3.DUQ.EDU>
-
- The Interest Group on the Status of Persons with Disabilities will
- sponsor or co-sponsor eight different sessions during the four-day AEJMC
- convention in Kansas City, Aug 11-14, 1993. Four of the sessions will
- be devoted to presentation of research on media and disability--one of
- them, co-sponsored by the Advertising Division, will focus on research
- on the presentation of individuals with disabilities in advertising.
- The interest group will team up with the Media Management and Economics
- Division for a teaching session on disability issues in journalism
- education-- including educating future media managers about the impact
- the Americans with Disabilities Act will have on the newsroom.
-
- The Interest group's activities get underway the first day of the
- convention with a research panel at 11 a.m. Wednesday August 11. The
- business meeting is set that evening at 7:15, immediately following the
- keynote address and reception.
-
- The afternoon of the second day, Thursday August 12, will be busy.
- The joint research session on disability portrayal in advertising is at
- 1:30. Following a break for refreshments, we team up with the Visual
- Communication and Theory and Methodology Divisions for a PF&R
- (Professional Freedom and Responsibility) panel on pictorial stereotypes
- in the media. Another research paper session follows at 5:15. Friday's
- activities by the group will be a bit less hectic, consisting solely of
- the teaching session with Media Management and Economics at 10:30 a.m.
-
- The final day of the convention, Saturday August 14, starts of with
- a panel at 10 a.m. and a final research session at 12:45.
-
- Those who are considering submitting research papers to the Interest
- Group's paper competition should note that this year's schedule has more
- than triple the time allotted for presentation of research on media and
- disability than we had last year in Montreal. Papers should be sent to
- Ann Preston, Department of Communication, North Dakota State University,
- Fargo, ND 58105. And just a reminder that our joint research session
- with the Advertising Division means we'll be looking for research
- examining the presentation of disability in advertising.
-
- If you have an interest in the PF&R session with Visual
- Communication and Theory and Methodology, the contact person is Paul
- Lester, California State University, Fullerton, 717-449-5302; FAX
- 714-773-2209; Internet: LESTER@FULLERTON.EDU. The teaching session
- with Media Management and Economics is being coordinated by John S.
- Clogston; Dept. of Journalism, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL
