- "Cyprus is valuable as a right arm for a country interested in its own
- defence or for its own expansionist aims if it harbours such aims.
- ...
- Many states to a certain extent because it suits their interests, want to
- see the Cyprus problem as our desire to protect the Turkish community on the
- island, whereas the actual problem is the security of 45 million Turks in the
- motherland together with the Turks in the island and the maintenance of the
- balance in the Middle East".
- Turan Gunes, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey at the time
- of the invasion of Cyprus. "Hurriyet", 20 July, 1980
-
-
- "The Turkish Armed Forces have never been pushed out by pen from the place they
- have entered with bayonet... We are not dealing here with a mere duty but with a
- mission;our mission is to make Cyprus our motherland."
- Ihsan Sabri Caglayangil, Foreign Minister of Turkey.
- "Halkin Sesi", 14 February, 1980.
-
- "The Turkish armed forces will ensure the eternal and happy existence of the
- Turkish state, which is the legacy of their lofty leader, and of Cyprus which
- is an inseparable part of Turkey."
- General Evren, President of Turkey. "Bayrak" Radio
- on 3 September, 1980.
-
- "What was won in military operations could not be overturned at a negotiable
- table".
- Mr R.Denktash, 222 March, 1977.

- WHAT IS TURKEY AFTER?
-
-
- Turkey had expressed interest in dominating Cyprus long before she could
- manufacture a story of "eleven years of oppression" of the Turkish Cypriots.
- Since the London Conference of 1955 Turkish political figures have from time
- to time forgotten the line of "peace keeping" and "the protection of the Turkish
- Cypriots" and talked of partitioning Cyprus in Turkey's strategic interests.
-
- It must not be forgotten that Turkey threatened to invade Cyprus and forcibly
- rearrange its population to suit its aims in 1964 and 1967, and finally
- succeeded in 1974.
-
- The coup was a conveniently offered opportunity. General Sancar, the Chief of
- Staff of the Turkish armed forces was reported in the Turkish newspaper
- "Hurriyet" on 6.3.1978 to have said that the military operation carried out
- in Cyprus in 1974 had been planned long before and at the last moment slight
- changes had been made to it.
-
- Turkey has already taken numerous steps to absorb the occupied part of Cyprus
- with the cooperation of the separatist Turkish Cypriot leaders. Members of
- successive Turkish Governments and Mr Denktash alike have repeatedly made it
- clear that what they wish is to make what was won by the sword their permanent
- dominion. They have also emphasized that they have no respect for the Cypriot
- identity of the island or its inhabitants. They regard Cyprus as a piece of real
- estate at the disposal of the Turkish state.
-
- In all their political actions Turkish Governments and the separatist Turkish
- Cypriot leaders have pursued the objective of irreversibly integrating the
- occupied area with Turkey, at the same time maintaining the fiction of a
- self-governing Turkish Cypriot community. Turkey has demanded that this
- community be accepted as an "equal partner" in the government of Cyprus. In
- this way Turkey would completely dominate the northern part of Cyprus and
- through an "equal partnership federation" also have a considerable say in the
- area which is now free.

- INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNATION OF TURKEY
-
- Since 1974 there has been repeated international condemnation for Turkish
- aggression. The United States Congress imposed an embargo on arms deliveries
- to Turkey for using US supplied weapons for aggressive purposes. The Non-
- aligned Movement and Commonwealth Heads of Government have strongly condemned
- the Turkish Occupation of part of Cyprus and her attempts to alter the
- demographic character of the island through the colonization programme.
-
- But the most weighty condemnation has come from repeated resolutions of the
- United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. These resolutions call
- for respct for the sovereignty, independence and territorial intergrity of
- Cyprus, for the withdrawal of all foreign trrops and for the return of the
- refugees to their homes in safety. They also have called for negotiations
- between representatives of the Greek and Turkish communities on the future
- constitutional system of Cyprus.
