- ATHENS, Greece (UPI) -- Greek trucks are being allowed to transit the
- former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia under a provisional agreement
- reached recently when officials of the two sides met at the border, the
- Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday.
- The dispute arose when Greek trucks were stopped at the border Jan. 4
- and refused entry because their transit permits did not bear the name
- ``Macedonia.''
- Foreign Ministry spokesman Dimitris Avramopoulos said officials from
- Athens and Skopje met at the border recently and found a temporary
- solution -- Greek trucks would be allowed to pass through the republic
- using their previous permits.
- The arrangement would apply until Jan. 31, Avrampoulos said. ``As to
- what will apply after that date, nothing has been discussed and nothing
- has been decided,'' he said.
- Earlier, Greece diverted its north-bound trucks through Bulgaria to
- avoid having to stamp the word ``Macedonia'' on transit permits the
- truck drivers carried.
- Athens has refused to recognize the former Yugoslav republic unless
- it stops using the name ``Macedonia,'' which is also the name of a
- northern Greek province.
- Greece says continued use of the name after the republic declared
- itelf independent of Belgrade implied expansionist ambitions on Greek
- territory.
- Avramopoulos said the agreement reached at the border was
- ``unofficial,'' and would not affect Greece's stance regarding U.N.
- recognition of the republic.
- He said Greek Foreign Minister Michalis Papaconstantinou was
- continuing talks at the United Nations with repesentatives of non-
- aligned countries and Britain, and was scheduled to meet Friday with U.
- N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
- In a related development, the Consumers Association of Greece called
- on Greeks to boycott Danish products to express resentment at remarks
- two days ago by Danish Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.
- Speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Jensen
- said that by blocking E.C. recognition of Macedonia, Greece ``acted
- unreasonably,'' and that he was ``ashamed of Greece.'' Denmark currently
- holds the rotating presidency of the Community.
- The Consumers Association asked Greeks to boycott Danish canned meat,
- cheese, beer, and chocolates, to register their protest.
