- ----------------------------Original message----------------------------
- This has probably been discussed before on this list so I apologize for any
- repetition. Our library has begun a big debate on whether or not we should
- load Marcive tapes directly into our NOTIS OPAC and clean them up later or
- whether we should load the tapes into a separate database which would appear
- as another menu item on the OPAC. The reference librarians vote for the latter
- because they want to be able to continue to describe LUIS, our online catalog,
- as an accurate record of our holdings. They are concerned that, if we load the
- Marcive tapes into LUIS without cleaning them up first, the OPAC, for the first
- time, will have significant numbers of records for things that are not actually
- on the shelves.
-
- I would like to hear from other libraries who have loaded the Marcive tapes.
- Has anyone out there loaded them right away into the OPAC without cleaning
- them up first? If so, do you have any idea of the percentage of records that
- did not reflect items on the shelf? Has anyone loaded them as a separate
- menu item on the OPAC? For those of you that put them into a test database
- not visible to the public and only added them to the OPAC when they were
- cleaned up, why did you decide to go that route?
-
- Finally, if you respond, please give me some idea of your staffing. Our
- cataloging department (who is implementing this project) has a total of 11
- people but only one cataloger will be working on this project part of her
- time with one and one-half staff positions devoted to it full-time.
-
- I would very much appreciate your input to help us make this decision.
- Thank you.
