- Subject: Bob Mould
-
- Since I don't remember seeing ex-Husker Du band member Bob Mould's name on the
- list of living (?) people who are out, I'd like to append that list and include
- him now.
- You too need to append your list; take out your little black magic marker and
- add him now.
-
- Mould has released two solo albums since the breakup of the Minneapolis-based
- Husker Du; they are 1989's _Workbook_ and 1990's _Black_Sheets_of_Rain_.
- Perhaps some of the more attuned among you can remember the video Mould did for
- his song "It's Too Late," in which the post-punk, pop noise guru wore outright
- a South Carolina gamecocks T-shirt, only to use the now-famous AIDS Coalition
- to Unleash Power slogan "Silence=Death" motto at the end of the song's MTV
- video.
-
- For those who read _The_Advocate_, make sure to go back and read Barry Walters's
- "Into the Groove" column from November 3 (issue 615) called "Sugar Walls" if you
- missed it the first time. In it, Walters correctly unravels some otherwise-
- baffling lyrics behind a song on a new album by Mould and his recently formed
- group, Sugar.
-
- The song in question is "The Slim," whose words I reprint here, without
- permission, alas, so you too can see the master lyricist at work:
-
- The Slim
-
- DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING
- DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'VE BEEN
- IS IT SIMPLE IS IT SIMPLE
- THE CHANCES SEEMED SO SLIM
- IN A CLOUD IS IT CLOUDY
- YOU'VE CLOUDED UP AGAIN
- YOUR PERCEPTION YOUR DECISION
- YOUR DECISION
-
- BEHIND I'M LEFT BEHIND
- LEFT BEHIND I'M LEFT BEHIND
- IT'S A MATTER OF TIME
- YOUR PROTECTION FROM EJECTION
- MY REJECTION
- PROTECTION FROM THE SLIDE
- PROJECTION FROM A SLIDE
-
- DID IT ALL SEEM SO EASY
- SO EASY TO CONCEDE
- GIVING IN GIVING IN
- THE CHANCES SEEMED SO SLIM
- IN A MOMENT JUST A MOMENT
- I FELT YOU RUSHING IN
- YOU WERE RUSHING I AM CRUSHING
- YOUR RUSH TO CRUISE THIS
-
- I'M LEFT BEHIND
- LEFT BEHIND I'M LEFT BEHIND
- IT'S A MATTER OF TIME
- YOUR PROTECTION FROM EJECTION
- MY REJECTION
- PROTECTION FROM THE SLIDE
- PROJECTION FROM A SLIDE
-
- I WITH YOU BREATH ON MY PILLOW
- I WITH THE MEMORY
- I GET TO WAIT IT OUT NEVER PUT IT AWAY
- WHEN YOU LEFT WITH YOUR DEATH
- I FEEL EMPTY WHEN I LOOK BACK
- ON MY PILLOW WHAT YOU USED TO SAY
- WHAT YOU USED TO SAY
-
- I WITH YOU BREATH ON MY PILLOW
- I WITH THE MEMORY
- I GET TO WAIT
- IT OUT NEVER PUT IT AWAY
- WHEN YOU LEFT WITH YOUR DEATH
- I FELT ANGER WHEN I LOOKED BACK
- ON MY PILLOW WHAT YOU USED TO SAY
- WHAT YOU USED TO SAY
-
- I FELT YOUR BREATH FOR A MOMENT
- I HEARD YOUR VOICE FOR A MOMENT
- THEN I LOOKED BACK
- ON MY PILLOW WHAT YOU USED TO SAY
- WHAT WE USED TO SAY
- THAT THE CHANCES SEEMED SO SLIM
- THE CHANCES USED TO BE SO SLIM
-
- NOW I SWIM ALONE
- THE SLIM
- ALONE
-
- TO HONOR AND OBEY
- TO CHERISH TO WORSHIP
- IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH
- FOR RICHER FOR POORER FOR ANYTHING
- TILL DEATH DO US PART
-
- Of the truly good albums released since 1990, I can think only of The Pet Shop
- Boys' 1990 _Behaviour_ with its many references to the AIDS epidemic as being
- tantamount to _Copper_Blue_ in the relevance and tunefulness of its many
- messages to our community.
-
- You can never know how good "The Slim" really is, despite my reprinting here the
- poignant story of one man's understandable anxiety over the possibility of being
- infected with HIV from his now-dead lover, until you go hear it yourself; but
- do more than listen to this song, my friends. _Spin_ magazine called
- _Copper_Blue_ the sixth best album of 1992; _The_Chicago_Tribune_ qualified the
- CD with "Explosive," and Barry Walters called the album "fabulous." I implore
- you to support Mould and his mates and buy _Copper_Blue_ today. I guarantee you
- won't be disappointed with the purchase. In my opinion, of all the other albums
- put out this year only REM's _Automatic_for_the_People_ and Peter Gabriel's _Us_
- can touch
- _Copper_Blue_'s mastery.
-
- Someone's writing a song about AIDS doesn't make him Queer, but make no mistake
- about it, Mould is Gay. The evidence is outlined in Walters's article, which
- cites Mould's shunning of gender-specific pronouns in his songs and how in a
- prior interview with _The_Advocate_ Mould refused to say he wasn't Queer when
- he could have as strong indications of the lyricist's true sexual orientation.
- Too, there is this proof: When Walters formerly asked Bob if he were Queer,
- Mould said, "I'm sure you can guess from the way I've avoided answering that
- question what the truth is." Can there be any doubt that Mould isn't Queer?
-
- What's in store for Sugar? Mould and fellow bandmates David Barbe (the ex-
- Mercyland bassist) and ex-Zulus drummer Malcolm Travis have a new album called
- _Beaster_ due out shortly before next Easter. No kidding.

-
-
-
- Hello All,
-
- My name is Michael (NOT2) and I run the gay forum on Delphi. On behalf
- of all 500 members and myself, we are glad GayNet is back! I started
- publishing GayNet Digest on this forum's message board January 1st.
-
- About myself: Living in New Jersey, I joined Delphi in April '91. Started
- IN FULL VIEW (gay forum's name) about Sept.'91. Organized a gay ski weekend
- trip for members of the gay forum. Only one member shows up for the event,
- who's from North Carolina, named Ken. We emjoyed the ski weekend and each
- other. Desided to start a long distance relationship and invest $7,000 in
- USAir. On November 1,92 I tie the knot and move in with him! And we are
- "happy ever after"!
-
- This weekend marks the one year anniversiry of the ski weekend trip, where
- Ken and I first met! Saturday, January 25,1992. So you see, marriage does
- happen via computer and modem!
-
- If anyone wants to join IN FULL VIEW or sign up for Delphi, just send
- me E-mail.

-
- In even a very limited sampling, I can say that we seemed to be quite
- well-represented in the crowds lined up to greet the Clintons and Gores
- at Thursday's White House Open House.
-
- As I was getting dressed Thursday, C-SPAN was showing the receiving line,
- and seemed to have President Clinton miked. Mostly, it was endless
- repetition of "Glad to see you... Thank you... Where are you from?...", etc.
-
- Occasionally, the people in line would say more than a perfunctory "Good
- luck, I'm glad you're here." In the short time I was listening, I heard
- three lesbians greet Clinton. The first told him, "When I got the notice
- [that I had been selected by lottery to greet you], I was so excited! I
- wanted to call and tell my mother, but I couldn't because she hasn't spoken
- to me in 3 years because I'm a lesbian." She closed with something like,
- "I hope you can help change those kinds of attitudes." The next woman in
- line appeared to be her lover, and also said something gay-positive. A short
- time later, there was this exchange with another woman in line:
-
- Woman: "Don't forget the gays!"
- Clinton: "I won't!"
- Woman: "Thank you!"
-
- It was great hearing all this!
