- Hi Folks,
- Here is my problem. I pulled pac.carl.org off a list of places
- where stuff of interest to educators ( software, data bases, etc)
- are archived to be emailed on request. I got to pac.carl.org with
- no problem and was delighted to find that they have the full ERIC
- available on line as well as a HUGE list of ftp sites. When I tryed
- to do an ERIC search, however, I was asked for an ID number and told
- that if I didn't have one I should go to my library and see about
- getting one. I am a GA so I went to talk to my boss about this.
- He was enthusiastic about getting both access to the ftp sites and
- about the possibility of getting the ability to download ERIC search
- and/or the documents found directly into an account from which they
- could be printed. He agreed to write a letter asking the library
- to give me an ID so that I could use this resource in my work as a
- GA.
- Here the problem starts. I went over to the library and was sent
- upstairs to talk to the "systems librarian" about getting an ID
- THis guy could not understand what I was talking about or what I
- wanted. My impression of the guy was, honestly, that he was a
- computer semi-literate who had been shown how to do a few basic
- things and really didn't know much. All I know is that I was
- sent to the library by Pac.carl.org to get an ID. Can anyone
- explain to me how I can either work around this guy or explain
- to him what I want in terms he can understand. I'm assumeing
- that since I spend a lot of my time and the departments money
- photocopying ERIC documents off of microficheI have a valid
- reason to want an ID and that, further, the ERIC documents and
- ftp archives were meant to be generally available. If this is
- wrong please correct me. If this is correct please tell me what
- I need to do next to get access. This guys inability to grasp what
- I want and why I need it is like a stone wall I'm beating my head
- against.

- P.S. I'm asumeing that if my boss writes a letter containing no
- more information than I can provide right now, this guy will just
- be confused by the letter and still will not get what we're trying
- to accomplish and why.
