  17. Event at UNO Will Be a Guide To Other Cities:
  18.    Omaha will serve as host for a Feb. 9 town meeting on achieving national
  19. education goals that will be beamed by satellite to perhaps hundreds of
  20. communities across the nation.
  21.    The program will focus on the Omaha 2000 school-improvement effort and serve
  22.  as a guide for communities wishing to organize and devleop their own strategie
  23. s for meeting the goals, said Michelle Griffin of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
  24. The goals incude having every child start school ready to learn, being first
  25.  in the world in mathematics and science and having a high-school graduation
  26. rate of at least 90 percent by the year 2000.
  27.    Locally, the program will be seen, beginning at 7:30 p.m. cst, at the
  28. University of Nebraska at Omaha in the Dodge Room on the third floor of the
  29. Milo Bail Student Center.
  30.    Omaha was one ofthe frst to be designated an America 2000 community.
  31. Since the city was selected, in September 1991, about 2,800 other communities
  32. have been designated nationally, including 13 in Nebraska.
  33.   The chamber's Center for Workforce Preparation and Quality Education
  34. is co-sponsoring the town meeting with the National Education Goals Panel,
  35. a bipartisan group charged wiht monitoring states' progress toward the
  36. program's six goals.
  37.    Gov. Nelson, as chairman of the National Education Goals Panel, will
  38. serve as moderator.
  39.    Also to participate will be John Gottchalk,  chairman of Omaha 2000
  40. and president and chief executive officer of The World-Herald; Alice
  41. Foster, a Millard teacher and member of the Omaha 2000 sterring committee; and
  42. State Sen. Jessie Rasmussen of Omaha, an early childhood educatin specialist
  43. and member of the Omaha 2000 steering committee.
  44.    Ms. Griffin said all of the America 2000 communities and 1,000 state and
  45. local chapters of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will be notified of the
  46. program's availability.  She predicted that the program would be seen in
  47. hundreds of locations, including businesses with satellite dishes.
