- Event at UNO Will Be a Guide To Other Cities:
- Omaha will serve as host for a Feb. 9 town meeting on achieving national
- education goals that will be beamed by satellite to perhaps hundreds of
- communities across the nation.
- The program will focus on the Omaha 2000 school-improvement effort and serve
- as a guide for communities wishing to organize and devleop their own strategie
- s for meeting the goals, said Michelle Griffin of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
- The goals incude having every child start school ready to learn, being first
- in the world in mathematics and science and having a high-school graduation
- rate of at least 90 percent by the year 2000.
- Locally, the program will be seen, beginning at 7:30 p.m. cst, at the
- University of Nebraska at Omaha in the Dodge Room on the third floor of the
- Milo Bail Student Center.
- Omaha was one ofthe frst to be designated an America 2000 community.
- Since the city was selected, in September 1991, about 2,800 other communities
- have been designated nationally, including 13 in Nebraska.
- The chamber's Center for Workforce Preparation and Quality Education
- is co-sponsoring the town meeting with the National Education Goals Panel,
- a bipartisan group charged wiht monitoring states' progress toward the
- program's six goals.
- Gov. Nelson, as chairman of the National Education Goals Panel, will
- serve as moderator.
- Also to participate will be John Gottchalk, chairman of Omaha 2000
- and president and chief executive officer of The World-Herald; Alice
- Foster, a Millard teacher and member of the Omaha 2000 sterring committee; and
- State Sen. Jessie Rasmussen of Omaha, an early childhood educatin specialist
- and member of the Omaha 2000 steering committee.
- Ms. Griffin said all of the America 2000 communities and 1,000 state and
- local chapters of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will be notified of the
- program's availability. She predicted that the program would be seen in
- hundreds of locations, including businesses with satellite dishes.
