- The College of Education (COE) at Arizona State University (ASU)
- invites nominations and applications for two Associate Deans to
- administer (1) its Teacher Preparation and Professional Development
- Programs and (2) its Graduate Programs in Education.

- Associate Dean - Teacher Preparation Programs - provides leadership
- in the delivery of certification programs in Elementary, Secondary,
- and Special Education. Endorsements are given in Bilingual
- Education, English as a Second Language, Early Childhood, Reading,
- Art, Music and Physical Education (K-12). The associate dean's
- office coordinates all student academic services including
- advising, internship and student teacher placement, supervision and
- other student support.

- Associate Dean - Graduate Programs in Education - responsible for
- continuing the development and implementation of all academic
- programs leading to a master's degree or doctorate in Higher
- Education, Educational Administration, Educational Policy Studies,
- Counseling Psychology, Counseling Education, Learning and
- Instructional Technology, Measurement, Statistics and
- Methodological Studies, School Psychology and Lifespan Development
- Psychology. The associate dean's office coordinates all graduate
- student services including, but not limited to, internship
- placement and supervision.

- Student recruitment and retention, admissions, faculty recruitment,
- placement and evaluation, faculty governance relationships,
- promotion and tenure, curriculum development and scheduling,
- budgeting and sabbatical requests characterize the types of
- decisions made or recommended by the two associate deans. Each is
- responsible, along with the Dean of the College and appropriate
- faculty governance bodies, for formulating policy not otherwise
- given within the university structure. They also are responsible
- for maintaining standards imposed by relevant accrediting agencies
- and for otherwise maintaining a high standard of scholarship among
- faculty and students.

- Successful candidates will have an earned doctorate in education,
- an established record of leadership and research, and a clear
- understanding of the changing needs in the preparation of
- professional educators. Their records of scholarship, instruction
- and service will make them eligible for tenure and the rank of
- professor at ASU. They will be committed to fostering
- collaborative practices in research, teaching and service in a
- diverse society, prepared to provide leadership in a changing
- professional environment and dedicated to strengthening the
- professional relationship between the COE and schools. They must
- provide leadership in the restructuring of the COE as it becomes a
- more effective organization in the educational climate of today as
- well as in the future.

- The ASU College of Education enrolls more than 4,000 graduate and
- undergraduate students, just under half of whom are in the Teacher
- Preparation Program. Most of the rest are enrolled in a graduate
- degree or certification programs including a "Post-Baccalaureate"
- program designed to enable individuals who did not major in
- education as undergraduates to qualify for a teaching credential.
- There are 110 FTE faculty in the COE with slightly more than half
- that number in teacher education.

- Arizona State University enrolls 40,000 graduate and undergraduate
- students on its main campus in 10 degree granting colleges. ASU
- serves the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (more than 2 million
- population) with its main campus in Tempe.

- Candidates must send a letter of interest, a current vita and the
- names, addresses and telephone numbers of five references (who will
- not be contacted without the candidate's permission). The postmark
- deadline for applications is March 1, 1993. Applications received
- after the deadline will be reviewed biweekly until the position is
- filled. The preferred starting date is July 1, 1993, but is
