- NEW DECpc 325SL NOTEBOOK PC HAS ADVANCED
-
- PORTABILITY, EXPANSION FEATURES
-
-
-
- MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 26, 1993 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
- today announced the DECpc 325SL, a sleek, notebook-size portable PC
- with features typically found only on desktop PCs. These include
- upgradable processor and display screens, removable hard disk drive,
- room for two expansion cards and strong, multi-level security.
- The new DECpc 325SL PC is also lightweight -- just 5.9 pounds
- (2.68 kg) -- and features a long, 6.5 hour battery life.
- The new Digital portable comes standard with a 25MHz 386SL
- processor with 64KB cache, 4MB main memory, 80 or 120MB hard drive
- and large, 640 x 480 VGA monochrome or passive matrix color display.
- The unit can be upgraded to a 486SL processor, 20MB of main memory
- and an active-matrix color display. The DECpc 325SL measures 8.5 x
- 11.5 inches (21.6 x 29.2 cm), is priced from $2,399 to $3,399,
- depending on configuration, and is available immediately.
-
- Advanced Capabilities for Mobile Computing
- The new portable also features advanced capabilities targeted
- to "mobile professionals" -- business travelers, office-to-home
- telecommuters and other users employed in sales or field
- professions. These include compatibility with PCMCIA Type II
- peripheral cards, removable hard disk drive, and sophisticated
- power management facilities.
- An important new enabling technology for small form-factor PCs,
- PCMCIA (for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
- is an industry-standard specification for attaching credit-card size
- peripherals -- everything from memory to modems -- to special
- compact sockets. The new DECpc 325SL is one of the few notebook
- products today to feature two such sockets (Type II is the current
- standard specification).
- The DECpc 325SL is available with removable hard disk drive in
- 80MB or 120MB capacities. Users can remove any of the PC's drives
- for purposes of securing data, exchanging drives with co-workers, or
- as a means of convenient field-swap to a higher-capacity unit.
- Sophisticated power management facilities include intelligent
- operations -- the unit can respond to the work habits of its user,
- then suspend power at times of no usage. Also included are an
- on-screen fuel gauge, fast-recharge main batteries and optional
- backup via standard alkaline batteries. Main battery life is up to
- 6.5 hours.
-
- Advanced Video, Features Make DECpc 325SL Top Performer
- The new Digital PC also features a range of easy to use,
- upgradable video displays. The standard 9.5 inch (24.13 cm)
- monochrome display uses VGA graphics to produce high-contrast
- monochrome images in 64 shades of gray. An optional F-STN
- passive-matrix display technology features 256 colors at 640 x 480
- resolution. Moreover, a highly advanced, 9.5 inch (24.13 cm) TFT
- active-matrix color display and processor upgrade kit will be
- available in early spring, 1993.
- Other features include three-level, ROM-based security, a
- cableless trackball that connects to an ergonomically-designed hot
- shoe built in to the front of the keyboard, interface to an I/O port
- replicator, support for an external, simultaneous color display, and
- "hot-swap" battery exchange capability without powering down the
- unit.
- "This new portable serves as an excellent example of how
- Digital can deliver leading technology today, with a path to the
- future," says Roger Matus, Director of Marketing for Digital's
- Personal Computer Business Unit. "Customers want power and
- performance in a notebook PC, but they also want strong flexibility
- and upgradability, too. The DECpc 325SL gives them those features."
-
- Packaging, Availability
- Standard with the new DECpc 325SL will be 64KB cache, 4MB RAM,
- removable 80MB or 120MB hard drive, 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy drive,
- LCD VGA Super Twist Sidelit display or 256-color passive matrix
- display, NiMH battery pack, serial, parallel, keyboard/mouse and
- docking port, MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 system software.
-
-
-
- The standard unit also includes pre-loaded fax and communications
- software from Bit Software, Inc., plus snap-on trackball, keyboard/
- mouse Y-connector and carrying case.
- The unit, peripherals and accessories are available
- immediately; the 486SL processor and active-matrix color display
- will be available in early spring, 1993.

- Direct catalog by calling 1-800-722-9332, through Digital Account
