  50. MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 26, 1993 --  Digital Equipment Corporation
  51. today announced the DECpc 325SL, a sleek, notebook-size portable PC
  52. with features typically found only on desktop PCs.  These include
  53. upgradable processor and display screens, removable hard disk drive,
  54. room for two expansion cards and strong, multi-level security.
  55.      The new DECpc 325SL PC is also lightweight -- just 5.9 pounds
  56. (2.68 kg) -- and features a long, 6.5 hour battery life.
  57.      The new Digital portable comes standard with a 25MHz 386SL
  58. processor with 64KB cache, 4MB main memory, 80 or 120MB hard drive
  59. and large, 640 x 480 VGA monochrome or passive matrix color display.
  60. The unit can be upgraded to a 486SL processor, 20MB of main memory
  61. and an active-matrix color display.  The DECpc 325SL measures 8.5 x
  62. 11.5 inches (21.6 x 29.2 cm), is priced from $2,399 to $3,399,
  63. depending on configuration, and is available immediately.

  65. Advanced Capabilities for Mobile Computing
  66.      The new portable also features advanced capabilities targeted
  67. to "mobile professionals" -- business travelers, office-to-home
  68. telecommuters and other users employed in sales or field
  69. professions.  These include compatibility with PCMCIA Type II
  70. peripheral cards, removable hard disk drive, and sophisticated
  71. power management facilities.
  72.      An important new enabling technology for small form-factor PCs,
  73. PCMCIA (for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
  74. is an industry-standard specification for attaching credit-card size
  75. peripherals -- everything from memory to modems -- to special
  76. compact sockets.  The new DECpc 325SL is one of the few notebook
  77. products today to feature two such sockets (Type II is the current
  78. standard specification).
  79.      The DECpc 325SL is available with removable hard disk drive in
  80. 80MB or 120MB capacities.  Users can remove any of the PC's drives
  81. for purposes of securing data, exchanging drives with co-workers, or
  82. as a means of convenient field-swap to a higher-capacity unit.
  83.      Sophisticated power management facilities include intelligent
  84. operations -- the unit can respond to the work habits of its user,
  85. then suspend power at times of no usage.  Also included are an
  86. on-screen fuel gauge, fast-recharge main batteries and optional
  87. backup via standard alkaline batteries.  Main battery life is up to
  88. 6.5 hours.

  90. Advanced Video, Features Make DECpc 325SL Top Performer
  91.      The new Digital PC also features a range of easy to use,
  92. upgradable video displays.  The standard 9.5 inch (24.13 cm)
  93. monochrome display uses VGA graphics to produce high-contrast
  94. monochrome images in 64 shades of gray.  An optional F-STN
  95. passive-matrix display technology features 256 colors at 640 x 480
  96. resolution.  Moreover, a highly advanced, 9.5 inch (24.13 cm) TFT
  97. active-matrix color display and processor upgrade kit will be
  98. available in early spring, 1993.
  99.      Other features include three-level, ROM-based security, a
  100. cableless trackball that connects to an ergonomically-designed hot
  101. shoe built in to the front of the keyboard, interface to an I/O port
  102. replicator, support for an external, simultaneous color display, and
  103. "hot-swap" battery exchange capability without powering down the
  104. unit.
  105.      "This new portable serves as an excellent example of how
  106. Digital can deliver leading technology today, with a path to the
  107. future," says Roger Matus, Director of Marketing for Digital's
  108. Personal Computer Business Unit.  "Customers want power and
  109. performance in a notebook PC, but they also want strong flexibility
  110. and upgradability, too.  The DECpc 325SL gives them those features."

  113.      Standard with the new DECpc 325SL will be 64KB cache, 4MB RAM,
  114. removable 80MB or 120MB hard drive, 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy drive,
  115. LCD VGA Super Twist Sidelit display or 256-color passive matrix
  116. display, NiMH battery pack, serial, parallel, keyboard/mouse and
  117. docking port, MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 system software.

  121. The standard unit also includes pre-loaded fax and communications
  122. software from Bit Software, Inc., plus snap-on trackball, keyboard/
  123. mouse Y-connector and carrying case.
  124.      The unit, peripherals and accessories are available
  125. immediately; the 486SL processor and active-matrix color display
  126. will be available in early spring, 1993.
